In short
- For theory: three books in English are the standard references on solid-liquid separation and filter media.
- For technical news: two specialist journals and a British association.
- For regulations and safety: Ineris, the Agences de l'eau (water agencies), INRS.
Reference books
L. Svarovsky (ed.), Solid-Liquid Separation, 4th edition, Butterworth-Heinemann / Elsevier, 2000. Multi-author book covering the principles and practice of solid-liquid separation and solids washing, with particular attention to equipment selection and evaluation, pretreatment and filter aids. elsevier.com
S. Tarleton and R. Wakeman, Solid/Liquid Separation: Principles of Industrial Filtration, Elsevier, 2005. The scientific and engineering principles of industrial filtration, by two authors from Loughborough University: cake formation, dewatering, washing, gravity separation, centrifugation and membranes. elsevier.com
D. Purchas and K. Sutherland, Handbook of Filter Media, 2nd edition, Elsevier, 2002. A comprehensive overview of filter media: fibres, woven fabrics, felts, nonwovens and other media, their properties and their uses. The closest to the subject of filter cloths. elsevier.com
In French
Techniques de l'Ingénieur, G. Burgot, « Décantation-Filtration », P1415, 2013 (in French). Review article on the two techniques and the phenomena involved, at laboratory scale; full access by subscription. techniques-ingenieur.fr
Techniques de l'Ingénieur, G. Baluais, « Post-traitements à la filtration », J3502 (in French). Pressing, washing and dewatering of the filter cake, with their modelling; useful for understanding membrane filter presses and belt filters. Full access by subscription. techniques-ingenieur.fr
Associations and journals
The Filtration Society. British non-profit association (registered charity no. 326503) that promotes knowledge of filtration and separation, organises conferences and gives awards to students and researchers. filtsoc.org (address given in the charity register: opencharities.uk)
Filtration + Separation. International trade journal for the sector since 1963: technologies, markets, products and events; some articles are freely accessible with an account. filtsep.com
International Filtration News. Journal published by INDA Media, covering liquid and gas filtration by market (chemicals, food and beverage, water and industrial wastewater…) and by topic (filter media, standards). filtnews.com
911 Metallurgist. Technical website devoted to mineral processing, with method sheets (for example the leaf test) and discussions between operators; to be read with the critical eye a forum calls for. 911metallurgist.com
French public bodies
Ineris – AIDA. The Ineris website that brings together the regulations on classified installations (ICPE, French regulation on classified installations for environmental protection), the nomenclature, waste codification, guides and BREFs, with help in identifying the texts applicable to an activity. aida.ineris.fr
The Agences de l'eau (water agencies). Six public bodies (Artois-Picardie, Rhin-Meuse, Seine-Normandie, Rhône Méditerranée Corse, Adour-Garonne, Loire-Bretagne) that collect charges from water users, industry included, and reinvest them as grants to local authorities, businesses and the agricultural sector. Joint presentation: eaurmc.fr
INRS. The Institut national de recherche et de sécurité (French national research and safety institute) publishes more than 2,000 resources on occupational risk prevention, including the reference brochure on lockout (ED 6109) and pages on work by outside contractors. inrs.fr · outside contractors
Direction générale des entreprises (French directorate-general for enterprise). Summary page on the regulation of food contact materials. entreprises.gouv.fr
Standards
ISO 9237:1995, air permeability of fabrics, confirmed in 2023. iso.org
ASTM D737-18(2023), air permeability of textiles, American method. knowledge.bsigroup.com
ISO 11465:2025, dry residue and water content of sludge and solid matrices. preview (webstore.ansi.org)
Standards must be purchased; in France, they are sold by AFNOR Éditions, and some university libraries or chambers of commerce allow them to be consulted. See also appendix B for how they are used.
A reading tip. Books explain the mechanisms; journals and manufacturers' documents give concrete cases, but often with a commercial interest. Always cross-check the two, and compare them with the history of your own filter (see chapter 4.5).
